Authorized National Body (ANB) |
The Indian Institute of Welding is the only National Body authorized by the INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF WELDING for promotion of professional qualifications of international standard in "Welding Technology" in India, through a number of Authorized Training Bodies (hereinafter referred to as ATBs) that would soon be launched at various locations in India. |
Objectives of Authorized National Body (ANB) of India |
The aim of The Indian Institute of Welding will be to ensure that for a particular level of welding qualification, the candidate will obtain the necessary knowledge of international standard, in line with the requirements specified by The International Institute of Welding, and that this knowledge would qualify him to work successfully in most countries around the world. The qualification system is so designed that the certified candidates would have the credentials to provide justice to the task assigned to them. This will be accomplished by appointment and approval of ATBs who shall conduct the courses and the examinations under the curriculum specified by the ANB in accordance with the guidelines specified by The International Institute of Welding. |
Eligibility Criteria & Functions of ATBs |
Eligibility |
Establishments desirous of becoming an ATB must be capable of providing facilities such as modern class-rooms, a state-of-the-art welding shop with modern welding equipment and accessories for imparting the required welding training and practice to the candidates; providing required base materials and consumables, employing adequately qualified teachers and instructors, and providing requisite administrative support. |
Functions |
The ATBs will conduct courses and examinations designed to prepare candidates for qualifications to international standard. Successful completion of an approved course will be a requirement of on-going qualification procedure. |
As the Authorized National Body (ANB), The Indian Institute of Welding will approve the ATB and determine the course/s the ATB will be authorized to conduct. The approval of the course will take into consideration the course content, team of lecturers & instructors, study materials prepared for the course as well as the equipment and the facilities provided to the candidates. The course will be subject to assessment audit and any significant deviation shall call for reassessment. |
Courses Offered |
- International Welding Engineer (IWE)
- International Welding Technologist (IWT)
- International Welding Specialist (IWS)
- International Welding Practitioner (IWP)
- International Welder (IW)
How to become an ATB |
The prospective ATB will be required to approach ANB, India, i.e. The Indian Institute of Welding, with a formal application and the prescribed fees for assessment. |
ANB will then conduct an interview with the applicant ATB, before inspecting and assessing the ATB's training facilities. The facilities should include class-rooms, suitable faculty members, teaching and presentation aids as may be appropriate for the course/s proposed to be conducted. |
The preliminary approval will be followed by a detailed inspection of facilities by a Lead Assessor appointed by the ANB to make sure that the facilities offered are as per the requirement and guidelines specified by the ANB. The ATB can apply for an approval to conduct any or all of the four courses; and the assessment will be carried out accordingly. The training program will include theoretical as well as practical coaching. The teaching hours for theoretical and practical courses are well defined as per the guidelines provided by the International Institute of Welding. |
The courses would include the following : |
- Welding Processes and Equipment
- Materials & their Behavior during welding
- Construction & Design
- Fabrication, Applications Engineering
- Fundamental Practical Skills
The course guidelines specify the minimum number of hours of training for each of the above subjects for each course. Candidates have an option to complete the training using two routes - standard or alternative. The standard route offers exemption from certain subjects (Part –I) to a candidate if the assessor is satisfied with the adequacy of the candidate's knowledge of the subject for which the exemption is sought for. The exemption, if provided, will be at the sole discretion of the assessor. However, the candidate will have to appear for the Intermediate Examination and then undergo the balance of the Standard Training Programme before appearing for the Final Examination. |
The Alternative Route is provided for a candidate having both an Engineering Degree in a subject complying with the Access Condition and at least 4-years' work experience in a welding function at the appropriate level. In this case, the ANB will conduct a detailed assessment of the candidate's experience, training and education; and if found suitable, allow the candidate to either directly appear for the Final Examination or undergo Part-I, II or III of the Training Modules at their discretion. |
The ATB will render a great service to the nation by providing training of international standard, and give the trained professional an opportunity to serve respectfully in India and abroad. |
