                   24th Surajkund Crafts Mela-2010

Internationally acclaimed annual Surajkund Crafts Mela commences from 1st February. While highlighting the uniqueness of the Mela this time around , Shri Sujit Benerjee, Secretary Tourism, Government of India stated that the Mela scheduled to be inaugurated by Sri Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Hon'ble Vice President  of India, would have participating craftsmen with exquisite talents not only from the length and breadth of the Country , but even from countries like Tajikistan, Thailand and Egypt besides the neighboring SAARC Nations. State o Rajasthan, known world over as the home for rich

               And magnificent artwork and craftsmanship, happens to be the theme State this time and for the complete 15 days, the venue would radiate the mesmerizing flavor of Rajasthan in all walks be it color, cuisine or customs. The main attraction of the Mela would be the Shekhawati Gate which has been beautifully done up this year.

              Projecting the objective of conduction this annual affair, he said that the organizing such a Mela aims at promoting the sensitivity of the rich Indian art, culture, music and folk art under one single banner and at one single venue for the benefit of its visitors besides affording the present generation a colorful opportunity to have a first hand feel of the extraordinary variety of the tradition and rural ambience that happens to be the hallmark of this country. It would be a bonanza for the foreign and domestic tourists in educating themselves about the diversity of Indian traditions and culture besides enjoying the vibrant ambience crated typically to represent the entire ethos of rural India in miniature. The Mela also affords the participating craftsmen a direct opportunity and exposure to market their products to the end customers.

           Organized primarily under the aegis of the Ministry of Tourism, the Mela happens to be a collective and concerted effort a agencies like Development Commissioners of Handicrafts, and Handlooms, and Ministries of Culture and External Affairs. Haryana Tourism and the Tourism Department of themes State that is Rajasthan this year, jointly conducts and coordinates the arrangements of the Mela. The very best amongst the craftsmen and folk artists converge from across the country along with their products and skill populating this 15 days long jamboree of Indian traditional art, Culture and tradition. This happens to be one amongst the most important and popular event in the annual national calendar organized in and around Delhi. The number of visitors that stood at over 7 lakhs last year is expected to increase very substantially this time.

               Acknowledging the credentials that the Mela is fast moving towards a mega event of international importance, it was informed that this year a high level team of Sri Lanka consisting of 25 persons is visiting Surajkund Crafts Mela to study the aspects of its conduct in totality with a view to replicate it .

            More than 400 craftsmen sponsored by  Development Commissioners Handicrafts and Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Rajasthan Government and other organistions of international repute have started reaching the venue to setup their exhibition cum sale counters within the Meal area. The area shall be flooded with over 200 day performers of folk dance, drama and other skills, including Octave dance group from North-East, folk dance include Kaal Belia (Rajasthan), Siddi Goma (Gujarat), Brij Ki Holi & Charkula (U.P), Bhangra (Punjab), Been Spera & Banchari (Haryana), 'Tajik Dances', "Egyptian Tannoura Dance" and "Thai Traditional Dances", performing throughout the day in various corners for 15 days. In the evening there would be daily cultural performances from 6 p.m. onwards in the nearby Open Air Theatre named Natyashala. The food court within the Mela premised shall have the cuisine form across the country with famous Chokhi Dhani from Rajasthan being the centre of attraction. Yielding to the popular suggestion, an extensive amusement park has been setup next to the Shekhawati gate for the benefit of children. The Mela shall have a number of competitions for school/college students such as Rangoli competition on 1st February, Face Painting competion on 2nd February, Essay Writing competition on 3rd February, Mehandi competition on 4th February, Drawing competition on 9th February, Kite Flying competition on 10th February and Photography competition for amateurs on 11th  February, 2010. There would also be an Exporters' Meet organized by office of D.C. Handicrafts on  11th  February.

           Amongst the main items and skill on display, folk painting, paper machie items, terracotta, iron crafts, bamboo and cane crafts, wood crafts, stone crafts, lac bangles, dhokra crafts, patola sarees, chanderi  sarees, sambalpur sarees, ikkat ans pashmina shawls, etc, are prominent. An exculsive gallery of exhibition and sale for Gems and Jewelry and other craftwork of exquisite worth from Rajasthan have also been planned. In addition,  40-45 crafts persons  from countries like Afagnistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand and Egypt are also participation in the 24th  Surajkund Crafts Mela. The Handicrafts and painting, furniture, leather goods, pottery, terracotta, stone artifacts from Rajasthan would fill the area with their exceptional presence.

              His Excellency, the Governor of Haryana, Shri Jagannath Pehadia, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Haryana, Shri Bhupinder singh Hooda and the Union Minister for Tourism, Housing and Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Shri Ashok Gehlot will also grace the inauguration ceremony. Similarly, Shri Om Parkash Jain, Minister for Transport, Tourism, Civil Aviation and Hospitality, Haryana Shri Mahendra Pratap Singh, Minister for Power, Renewal Energy, Labour & Employment Haryana , Smt. Bina Kak, Minister for Tourism , Women & Child Development Rajasthan and Sh.Rajendra Singh Guda, Minister  of State for Tourism, art & Culture Rajasthan are expected to grace the inauguration of Mela.

 Surajkund Crafts Mela is a well known annual event that takes place in the Surajkund village near Delhi. It showcases the finest Indian handlooms, handicrafts, authentic fragrances & flavors of its rich cuisines. Theme
