Dear Vikas Thakur

I'll keep this one short as time is not on our side.

Last week, Greenpeace took the voices of over 41,000 of Nestle's own customers directly to the company's doorstep.

Greenpeace activists at NestleNestle told us they'd rather speak directly to their customers, as if sidestepping Greenpeace would improve the company's already tarnished image, or change the views of tens of thousands of customers who – on their own – are campaigning against Nestle's very public love affair with genetic junk.

Now, there's a slight problem. Even while we're at Nestle's front door trying to stop the company from polluting India's food supply forever, the government is unlocking the back door and allowing genetic contamination to sneak in unnoticed.

This is crazy. It seems foolish for 41,000 of us to force giant corporations to change their ways, when our own government is cozying up with them at the first available opportunity.

Jairam RameshJairam Ramesh, Minister of Environment & Forests, had committed five months back that he doesn't approve of genetically-engineered food crops. And yet, a committee in his Ministry is meeting tomorrow to do just that: opening the floodgates to genetic contamination of India's fragile food supply.

We know Mr. Ramesh personally. He listens to reason. But as a politician, he needs to hear it from lots of people. That's just why we're launching Greenpeace India's biggest online action today. By midnight, we're sending him thousands of emails, faxes and phone-calls, so that when he wakes up tomorrow, he does the right thing.

There isn't a moment to lose. Tell the Minister where you stand on genetically-contaminated food. Let him know that we don't want genetic junk on our plates, whether it comes from Nestle or from his own government.

It'll take just one click, and just one minute of your time. Time to stand up and be counted.

The story so far…

  • Three Indian companies (Britannia, MTR and Ruchi Soya) commit to a safe-food policy.
  • Public pressure forces Nestle to commit that it will sell no genetic junk in India… as long as it is prohibited by the law.
  • On the other hand, the GEAC (Genetic Engineering Approval Committee) is meeting TOMORROW to approve commercialization of Bt Brinjal, reversing all your efforts to keep our food safe.
